By providing concrete facts and solid reasons, the passage above mainly discusses the relationship between low and high esteem. The author points out that high esteem is prone to bring different kinds of violence, contrary to the idea that people with low self-evaluation are more likely to hurt others. Then he takes a step further, stating that the consequence of pursuing high-esteem might be counterproductive and hazardous. This conclusion seems unreasonable at the first sight, but it is logical under scrutiny.
There’s no denying the fact that (It is frequently assumed that) people with low-esteem are often violence-oriented, particularly bullies, rapists and gangsters. This statement does contain an element of truth. But it must be pointed out that those people with high-esteem are indeed dangerous. For one thing, they are often full of self-pride and self-respect. It follows that these qualities always bring a feeling of absolute superiority over other people, including the competitors or challengers. For another thing, this self-evaluation is subjective, rather than objective, and the side-product is that these people are in lack of modesty and self-control. As a consequence, when the pressure from the outside world is tremendous, far beyond the human capability, high esteem often transforms into anxiety, depression and mental collapse, all of which are often linked with a chain of violent and destructive activities.
In this issue, it is essential that some inherent virtues be advocated in the value education. It seems justified to emphasize the competitive spirit, because people are living in a world full of challenges. Without this spirit, it would be difficult to cope with those problems in the workplace. But modesty and self-control are also indispensable. Both of them are beneficial for human beings, whose psychological situation is often unstable. By learning to control themselves and showing respect to others, modern people can become calm and self-assured, bringing inner peace to their hearts and harmony to the outside world. This idea might sound traditional, but it is at least rational and realistic.
