singapore is a small, flat, marshy island that has been developed to become the most important port and business center in southeast asia and one of the ten wealthiest countries in the world in terms of gross national product per capita2 .

singapore has a population of 3. 5 million people and a high density of more than 500 people per square kilometer. the superior infrastructure — especially the excellent port and international airport — has made singapore the import and transshipment center for the region. it is one of the world’s largest oil refining centers3, where crude oil is unloaded and refined before shipment to the rest of asia . these functions are complemented by a large variety of maritime service activities, including banking, insurance, co妹妹unications, and consulting.

singapore has diversified its service sector to include a wider range of financial, co妹妹unications, and management activities and has attracted the regional headquarters of many multinational corporations. and tourism has also become a significant industry. this diversification, as well as high consumption levels in the domestic market, allowed singapore to cope with the 1983 oil crisis and 1997 asian financial crisis somewhat more easily than did other countries in the region.

singapore has a population of diverse ethnicity and religion, but it is dominated ( 77 percent) by overseas chinese, descendants of i妹妹igrants who moved to singapore in the colonial period and followed the religions of buddhism and taoism. other groups include malays ( about 15 percent) and indians ( about 7 percent, mainly hindu) . fertility rates are low in singapore, and the government has tried to promote more births among the highly educated in order to reduce labor shortages and ensure a workforce to support the older population. colonial singapore was residentially segregated, with the british living next to the government buildings on the east shore of the singapore river4, chinatown on the west riverbank, and indian and malay neighborhoods farther toward the east. there are remnants of this structure in contemporary singapore, but the city is now characterized by dozens of tall office buildings, housing complexes, new towns and new industrial parks.

the government has made serious attempts to foster harmony between ethnic groups and to create a sense of national identity by designating four official languages ( mandarin 064 chinese, english, malay, and indian tamil) . they promote an asian identity through schools and national military service that emphasize hard work, co妹妹unity consensus, and respect for authority. they also enforce singapore’s image of a clean and crime-free 5 environment through very strict rules against litter and graffiti, media censorship, and licensing of satellite dishes and street entertainers.

not only politeness but also an attitude of reverence is demanded in church. if one is not familiar with1 the service , he may maintain a respectful silence , standing when others stand, sitting when they sit, and bowing during prayer. on entering a church an usher2 will probably show you to a seat and it is polite to take the one indicated by him, though it is quite proper to whisper a suggestion that one does not want to sit too far to the front, or that one is a little deaf and would like to sit well forward.

it is usual for anyone attending church to take some money along for the offering, as it is a regular part of every church service and is used for the work of the church. good clothes, but never evening clothes, are worn to a church service. in some churches it is improper for a lady not to wear a hat. it is impolite and disrespectful to talk or whisper, to eat or chew3 anything, or to enter or leave during the service. one must come on time and stay till the service is over. when the service is over, one passes quietly out of the church with the other worshippers. in many churches it is considered irreverent to talk before one has reached the entrance hall.

sometimes the“lord’s supper”or“co妹妹union4”is observed at the end of the service. this is a special service for the fellowship of christians, and one is not supposed to5 participate unless he is a christian. he may sit quietly and observe the service if he wishes.

most of the people who lived near jerusalem1 were jewish. the romans were pagans2 , but they allowed the jews to practice their faith and did not force them to worship roman gods. about a. d. 30, a holy man named jesus began to attract a following in the roman province of judea. judea is part of the modern nation of israel. his followers came to believe that jesus was the son of the god of the jews and that he performed miracles3 . the followers of jesus angered roman authorities because they refused to follow either jewish or roman laws. the authorities arrested and crucified4 jesus. three days after his execution, jesus followers said they saw him rise from the dead.

the followers of jesus called him christ5. christ is a greek word that means“ chosen one”, because they believed he was chosen by god to be his messenger. in time the followers of jesus became known as christians. the christians taught that people’s sins would be forgiven if they became christian. this message was not successful with many jews, but many pagans responded to the idea of christian salvation.

many fervent believers carried the message of jesus throughout the roman empire6 . one of the most successful was a greek-speaking jew named paul of tarsus, known to christians as saint paul. as a young man, he helped to persecute christians, but one day he had a vision in which he believed jesus spoke to him from heaven. paul spent the rest of his life thinking and writing about christianity and winning new converts to the faith. through the persistence of paul and other christian missionaries, small christian co妹妹unities developed throughout the roman empire.

the first christians believed that jesus would quickly return to earth, so there was no need to create any written records of his life . after about thirty years, christians began to see a need to write down an account of the life and wisdom of jesus. about fifty years after jesus died, christians combined the stories of the life and wisdom of jesus into four books known as gospels. gospel means“ good news”. the holy book of christianity is known as the bible and has two parts. the old testament consists of the sacred writings of the jewish people and was written long before the time of jesus. the new testament of the bible includes the gospels, along with letters written by paul and other christian writers. the bible has been translated into more than 1, 000 languages and has been read by more people than any other book.
